The challenge

As part of our ongoing contract for painting and pre-paint repairs within a healthcare environment, we were approached by the client to expand the scope of works to include additional refurbishment and redecoration tasks.

Client Request

The client identified a need to enhance the aesthetic and functional quality of several key areas within existing buildings.

These included:

Communal Spaces – High-traffic zones requiring durable finishes and a welcoming atmosphere.

Patient Wards – Sensitive environments where work needed to be carefully scheduled to minimize disruption to patient care.

Surgical Departments – Areas requiring strict adherence to hygiene standards and specialist coatings suitable for clinical settings.

Our approach

To meet the specific requirements of each environment within the healthcare facility, a range of high-performance coatings were selected to ensure durability, hygiene, and ease of maintenance:

Surgical Areas:

We applied Johnstone’s Microban Water-Based Eggshell, a specialist antimicrobial coating designed to inhibit bacterial growth—ideal for sterile and clinical environments.

Ward Areas:

A combination of Dulux Diamond Eggshell and Crown Scrubbable Eggshell was used to provide a tough, washable finish capable of withstanding frequent cleaning while maintaining a fresh appearance.

Timber Surfaces:

All timber elements were finished with Dulux Water-Based Satinwood, offering a smooth, low-odour, and hard-wearing surface suitable for high-traffic areas.

These finishes were chosen not only for their technical performance but also for their contribution to a clean, calming, and professional healthcare environment.

Why Mitie?

This contract was particularly challenging, delivered for Kier Construction as part of a high-profile hospital retrofit project. The scope of work involved an extension to the main building, and we were collaborating with numerous other contractors throughout the process. The nature of the contract was very stop-start due to frequent specification changes and access issues caused by other trades. There were weeks when we were on site full-time with a team of 5-6 operatives, while other weeks we were only able to work 1-2 days with just 1-2 painters. This inconsistency made it difficult to manage the project effectively from top to bottom.

The results

The entire team collaborated effectively to ensure the successful completion of the project. Kier expressed their appreciation for our collective effort and dedication. We delivered a high-end finish across all areas, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to quality and excellence. As always, the painters played a pivotal role, enhancing the overall appearance and elevating the work of other trades.
