Slieve Donard Hotel
GH Decor’s 30 years expertise working on large scale hospitality projects including the refurbishment of the 460 bedroom Hilton Hotel in Brighton during 2022 made them the painting contractor of choice for the £16m refurbishment project of the prestigious Slieve Donard Hotel, Newcastle, County Down.
Built in 1898 the refurbishment is set to be revealed this summer, just in time to celebrate the hotel’s 125th year anniversary. GH Decor worked to a tight five-month schedule to fulfil a large scale refurbishment of the 180 bedrooms, foyer, ballroom, oak room, chandelier room two bars, bridal lounge and restaurant. The hotel remained open to the public during the refurbishment, imposing challenging conditions of no sanders or machinery to be used between the hours of 7pm and 10.30am as not to disturb the guests.
Throughout the project GH Decor worked in partnership with the international interior designers, based in America supporting the design decisions being made in different time zones and colour matching into Dulux Trade.
The products used on this project were Dulux Trade Durable Flat Matt, Diamond Eggshell, Diamond Satinwood and Vinyl Matt. This allowed the client to achieve the deep colours required while also obtaining a tough durable product for high traffic environments.
The Slieve Donard Hotel was built in the Victorian era and therefore one of the biggest challenges on site was making good on the old substrates to achieve a high standard finish.
This project was challenging due to the age of the building, size of the job, number of various trades on site, remaining open to guests during refurb and time restraints but with excellent organisation and a great team GH Décor handed the project over on time on the 14th July 2023.
This project has gone so well that when handing the project over the director of GH Décor, Gerard Hughes received a personal handshake from the general manager advising him and his team were so easy to deal with and their conscientious efforts to be mindful of noise to their current guests during the project resulted in them not knowing the extensive work was taking place.
GH Decor have secured additional large-scale projects the leisure, housing and commercial sectors this summer due to the incredible detail, workmanship and excellent project management demonstrated on this project.
