The Parkgate Hotel Westgate Street Cardiff

Whiterock Decorators Ltd have recently completed the internal decorations to The Parkgate Hotel, Cardiff’s finest new luxury hotel within touching distance of the Principality Stadium, for main contractor, BECT. This development included the renovation of two vacant listed buildings, the former Cardiff Central Post Office and the old County Court, within the Cardiff City Centre conservation area as well as the construction of a 6-storey building to unite the two historic buildings.
The hotel includes 170 guest bedrooms and suites, a signature restaurant and bar, an elegant tea lounge, and a luxurious rooftop spa overlooking the skyline of the capital. In addition, the event spaces include the versatile Postmaster Suite, holding up to 432 people, and the more intimate Telegraph Room, an elegant private dining or meeting space for up to 50 people with an open view to the theatre kitchen.
The project had to be ready for opening for the Welsh rugby teams Autumn international with the New Zealand All blacks.
The projects program was extremely tight and there was a lot of early delays due to Covid and material shortages which made an already tight program even more difficult to deliver. We encountered several leaks throughout the project which resulted in areas having to be repaired, sealed and then fully redecorated. We also encountered a lead problem in the main bar area which had to be professionally removed before we could start any decoration in the bar area. Our package consisted of the decoration of all ceilings walls and all woodwork throughout the hotel. The ground floor works was mostly carried out using airless sprayers by our specialists operatives whilst decorating the ceilings and walls we had to tape and drape most areas as we had two different colours to work with, the woodwork was done by a mix of hvlp spraying and brush and rollers resulting in some exceptional finishes. The last couple of weeks of the project was extremely challenging but with regular team briefings and all the trades working together including late nights and every weekend worked up to completion day we managed to deliver job on time which was massive achievement for all involved.
The painting was carried out to an extremely high standard using Dulux Trade Durable Flat Matt. Beautiful period architectural features of the iconic Grade II listed building, including the original ceiling in the grand lobby, have been restored to their former glory. All empty tins were recycled through Dulux Decorator Centre.
