Scottish Prison Service
Following a comprehensive tender process, we were pleased to secure a five-year full redecoration contract with the Scottish Prison Service (SPS), covering 14 of the largest prisons in Scotland. We complete joint surveys with the SPS Estates Department where we agree the scope of works and the specification to be used, with the best and safest form of access equipment also agreed at this stage. In agreement with SPS, we formulate a Programme of Work and the shift pattern that is most suitable for that part of the prison, which allows SPS to arrange for escorting officers to be in attendance. We hold mandatory pre-start meetings before each individual works order commences with colour schedules chosen by the Prison Governor at each individual establishment which is then relayed through the SPS Estates Department.
As well as receiving our own health and safety site inductions, each operative must complete a full SPS induction carried out by the Estates Department detailing prohibited items and security processes that must be adhered to at all times. At the beginning of each shift, the operatives report to the prison reception and go through the security protocol in order to gain access to the site. Operatives advise prison security of which areas of the prison are to be worked in along with the duration; an escorting officer then accompanies the operatives to the work location. A plant and tool register form is completed by the operatives, so that they know exactly what items have been taken into the work area. This is checked and signed by the escorting officer when entering and exiting the place of work to verify that all plant and tools are accounted for.
Quality and health and safety inspections are carried out daily with periodic inspections completed by Trident’s Head of Operations, supported by joint weekly inspections with the SPS Estates Department. The standard of work completed is extremely high and with a particular expectation that each work area is meticulously clean after each shift. SPS require that each paint application process be uniform so that it does not look ‘part applied’, which is vitally important when working in areas that are public facing.
