East Lothian Council

This four-year (2 years +2) contract comprises the internal and external redecoration and associated repairs of various Council-owned public buildings including schools, libraries, museums, care homes, nurseries, educational buildings and community centres.

A key part of the contract is our ability to be very flexible in delivery and to support the complex and changing needs of the customer, with a total focus on health and safety and delivering high quality works. We have allocated a team of 8 painting and multi-trade operatives to the contract who are directly employed by Trident and highly trained with particular emphasis on health and safety and compliance with CDM 2015 regulations. All operatives are Enhanced Disclosure Scotland checked due to working in public environments that may have vulnerable groups, as well as CSCS cardholders and receiving contract specific HSE training before being permitted to undertake any works on-site.

We have recently carried out decoration works as part of a refurbishment project at the Corn Exchange Building in Haddington, a Victorian building used as a community hall/public facility. We were tasked with painting the ceiling and roof trusses which had not been decorated for a very long time, and so the existing coatings were failing badly. We prepared a specification that would bring back to life the ceilings in this historic building.

It was important that we factored in how to access the ceilings. The hall has a timber floor; we therefore engaged with the architect to determine the weight limit that could be applied to the floor without causing any damage. After site meetings with our access equipment suppliers, it was decided that we could use a variety of access equipment to gain access to the ceiling height without causing any damage to the floor. To further prevent damage, we also covered the floor using 25mm plyboard. The project was a great success resulting in the ceiling being transformed back to its former glory and meeting the programme dates.
