The requirements

Middlesbrough Football Club (MFC) were promoted to the Premiership for the 2016-17 season and as a new club were required to undertake substantial ground improvements by the FA.

As well as upgrading pitch, player, press and hospitality areas, the Club also required an aesthetic external makeover to include the structural steel frame of the stadium which was looking tired and suffering from surface corrosion.

The work involved the preparation and re-painting of the supporting steelwork to the external structure and roof of the 35,000 seater stadium.

Our client was looking for a team with specialised skills to provide a proposal on specification, cost and access equipment to facilitate this work.

How we helped

Mitie’s Painting Division surveyed the stadium and produced a detailed proposal utilising specialist paint and access systems to meet MFC’s demanding criteria.

With the stadium’s location being near to the River Tees and the North East Coast, the work dictated a robust specification for the preparation and application of a specialist two pack marine coating system.

This challenging project involved accessing areas of steelwork some 35 metres high and necessitated working from both car park and pitch side elevations. Using IPAF trained operators; Mitie employed the use of a Genie 135/70 which is one of the largest Super Booms available in the UK.

The work was on site for 8 weeks prior to the first game of the 2016-17 season and in total approx. 4000 litres of specialist coatings were applied.

The results

The applied paint system offers MFC the comfort that their stadium is not only aesthetically pleasing but also well protected for many years to come. Visiting fans to the stadium this year cannot fail to be impressed by the ‘new boys’ facilities.
