Kirkgate Shopping Centre
Internal redecoration and pre-paint repairs
The results
The logistical challenges encountered on this project were considerable but we met such challenges in an efficient and professional manner, which ensured the works were completed within the timescales required and within budget.
In conclusion, we have a happy client and a project that has been completed to the highest quality standards - a credit to our industry.
? ‘Commended’ in the Painting and Decorating Association Awards 2014
“The public areas were repainted to a good commercial standard with all areas within hand reach coated with an anti-graffiti glaze. The centre looks clean and bright, a good job considering the access problems. The client was pleased with the finished work.”

The requirements
Kirkgate Shopping Centre is a large shopping centre located in Bradford, West Yorkshire. The footfall of the centre is 250,000 visitors per week and is open every day.
The shopping centre was looking for a reliable and experienced painting contractor to carry out internal redecorations to all public areas in order to keep the centre looking clean, fresh and current.
The shopping centre required the work to be carried out whilst it remained fully operational.
Kirkgate Shopping Centre chose Mitie’s panting division to carry out the works after we successfully evidenced our extensive knowledge of painting systems and experience of working on similar projects in the leisure and retail arenas.
We also demonstrated our ability to provide a high quality service and meet the access challenges within such a complex building, alongside ensuring the continuous operation of the busy centre.
How we helped
The work involved the redecoration of ceilings, walls, wood and metalwork, including the application of anti-graffiti coatings to the walls of public staircases and Dulux Metalshield to ornate metal rails.
We executed the work outside of the opening hours to minimise disruption, ensuring the centre could remain fully operational throughout.
The main challenge was logistics; we had to apply coatings to areas of difficult access, ensuring that pre-finished surfaces were protected and that the operation of a busy shopping centre was not compromised.
Of particular difficulty was the redecoration of the high-level domed roof which is approx. 12m above floor level. The domed roof and lower soffits are fitted with approx. 2,500 25mm flush fitting neon light fittings, which all had to be cut in separately.
Under the dome is an open air café and glass lift which both required sheeting up every evening for protection whilst we worked above, put back in service by 6am the following morning.
