Bagnalls undertook the external painting of the link bridge at Meadowhall Shopping Centre, Sheffield. The bridge, which spans the River Don, is used constantly by commuters and shoppers going to and from the local railway station.
The works were undertaken around the clock, with
two separate teams working 12 hour shifts. The
bridge remained open during the entire project so the implementation of our robust safe systems of
work was paramount. Bagnalls also had to get permissions from the Environment Agency and the Highways Agency to demonstrate environmental compliance and implement road traffic management on the busy commuter route A6109.
Specialist mobile elevated work platforms were used, with extended boom reach, which ensured a safe working environment for operatives and maximum protection from paint entering the watercourse below.
All areas were pressure washed to remove salt
contaminants and surface prepared by wire brushing and scraping back as areas were not badly corroded. Then bare areas were patch primed, followed by a steel and cladding paint system.
Bagnalls has an extensive history on this site as we
were the main painting contractor when Meadowhall
shopping centre was originally built in the 1980s.
Bromley Town Hall, well where do I start? Firstly, UK Decs Ltd priced this building which is split into three number jobs.
1 – Offices
2 – Restaurant
3 – Hotel
All was priced in January 2021, we heard by our client at the time Phelan Construction that they were pulling the plug on this, so when WFC Contractors called us in mid-2021 to price the work it was a quick turnaround and start with them.
The building was stood derelict for many years and having several fires it was not in the best of conditions, the building was also damp from top to bottom.
Dulux was brought on board by myself to help with the scope of works, they called many times to do the damp test all over and recommended paint that was going to be suitable for the building. We also used Earthborn Paints on the old and line plaster.
Lots of areas had to be repainted some being four, five or even six times due to damp coming through, especially in the old air raid shelters under the building.
Platform towers and scaffolding were used for access in the main rooms such as the private lounge etc.
When painting the building we experienced many unusual substrates from bars to prison cells to air raid shelters to court rooms, ballrooms, offices, canteens all under one roof.
All this work was to be completed in 12 months as well as a new area in the newly formed Hotel.
Bromley Town Hall was a pleasure to work on, not only for its wealth of history and visits from Kings, Popstars and Famous Villains being held in the cells.
Our experienced team of decorators were called to this site at Holly Hill Mansion in Fareham. This Edwardian Mansion built in 1911 was initially a single grand residence. The building was divided into 15 individual apartments in the 1950 and was owned and managed by Fareham Borough Council until being sold to a developer after falling into disrepair.
The developer MCH Southern renovated and reconfigured this large building into 10 luxury apartments. Our team have worked with MCH Southern on a number of residential conversions, developing a good rapport with Mark and the team.
Our business was the ideal contractor to undertake this project due to the unique multidisciplinary nature of our business. The specialist cleaning team were called to site before decoration works commenced to clear builders’ waste and thoroughly clean all areas ready for decoration. Our capability to use our own cleaning teams means that we can manage the timescales more effectively and price more competitively than other companies who will need to instruct additional cleaning contractors.
The ability to bring in our own carefully trained staff pays dividends to our clients, with carefully trained cleaners from our window cleaning team being able to assist our painting and decorating team by carefully cleaning the period windows – ready for restoration, after filling and sanding and finally as a finished piece. This collaboration enables us to bring the best of the skills from both teams together across the whole project to achieve unrivalled results.
Our client had specified Teak wood stain for the balustrade and windows. This stain was hard wearing, making it practical for use in the communal grand stairway. The warm wood colour and soft sheen complemented and enhanced the natural beauty of the wood and intricate carved details. The selection of Teak wood stain was a choice that all team members felt did the building justice and was a pleasure to use, seeing the neglected woodwork restored to its former glory.
The stain was applied after careful and painstaking preparing of all surfaces – again we were able to draw upon the specialist skills of the cleaning team to remove years of built-up grime - before gently sanding.
After applying filler and preparing new plaster board walls all walls throughout the communal areas were painted with Dulux Matt Emulsion tinted to White Mist. This crisp cool white shade was chosen to create the modern, sophisticated look that is compatible with the high-quality finish of the apartments. The warm undertone of the Teak woodwork is complemented by the White Mist walls giving a cohesive feel to the scheme across these large, open, light filled areas. Additional wooden pannelling was prepared and painted in Teak wood stain drawing reference from the communal stairway, creating harmony across the spaces.
The painting and decorating team were also responsible for painting exterior surfaces of the windows, guttering and downpipes. Unfortunately, due to years of neglect the wooden window frames had fallen into a poor state – this could have presented a problem as the window frames were split and fragile, just painting them was not an option for the team who wanted to produce work of the very highest quality. The team carefully worked in stages with products from the Dulux Repair Care range. This left a long lasting, seamless repair which was then painted in striking Dulux Weathershield Black Gloss for a high impact result with the original stained glass.
A genuinely stunning result both inside and outside. Mark Harvey of MCH Southern, our client was thrilled with the high-end finish produced by the T&H Contract Services team. Once carefully cleaned the site was handed over ready for the new apartments to be inhabited.
